A salary of $80,000 with 20% benefits creates a $96,000 compensation baseline. With $10,000 of expenses, a 10% reserve and 1,196 annual billable hours, the break-even rate is about $98.48/hour before adding a cushion.

Salary to freelance rate formula

Total compensation = salary × (1 + benefits % / 100). Annual revenue target = (total compensation + annual business expenses) / (1 - reserve % / 100). Annual billable hours = working weeks × hours per week × billable utilization % / 100.

Break-even hourly rate = annual revenue target / annual billable hours. Recommended rate = break-even rate × 1.10. The day rate assumes eight billable hours; the employee hourly equivalent spreads total compensation over 52 weeks.
