How the download time calculator works
The calculator converts the file size into bytes, then into bits. It converts the advertised internet speed into bits per second, applies the efficiency percentage, and divides file bits by effective bits per second.
The main formula is: download seconds = file size in bits / effective speed in bits per second. Effective speed is the entered connection speed multiplied by the efficiency percentage.
Bits vs bytes
File sizes are usually written in bytes: KB, MB, GB and TB. Internet speeds are usually written in bits per second: Kbps, Mbps and Gbps. Since 8 bits equal 1 byte, a 100 Mbps connection does not download 100 MB every second. In ideal conditions it moves about 12.5 MB per second before overhead.
MB vs Mb
Capitalization matters. MB means megabytes, while Mb means megabits. Download pages often show file size in MB or GB, while internet plans show speed in Mbps or Gbps. This calculator keeps those units separate so the estimate does not accidentally mix bytes and bits.
Why real downloads are slower than line speed
Wi-Fi quality, router performance, server limits, congestion, VPNs, protocol overhead and other devices on the network can reduce real transfer speed. The efficiency input lets you model that gap. A 90% setting means the calculator uses 90% of the advertised speed.
Example download time calculation
A 10 GB file contains 80,000,000,000 bits using decimal file units. On a 100 Mbps connection with 90% real-world efficiency, the effective speed is 90 Mbps. The estimated time is 80,000,000,000 divided by 90,000,000, or about 889 seconds.
FAQ
Why is my actual download slower than the calculator?
The estimate depends on the efficiency value. If the source server is slow, Wi-Fi is unstable or other devices are using bandwidth, lower the efficiency percentage to model that real connection.
Should I enter Mbps or MBps?
Most internet plans are measured in Mbps, which means megabits per second. If a download app shows MB/s, multiply that value by 8 to approximate Mbps.
Does this use decimal or binary file units?
This page uses decimal file units: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, and so on. Some operating systems display binary sizes differently, so very large files may vary slightly.
